Children’s Books for Wellbeing
An exploration of picture books and novels which may support teaching and learning in Social, Personal and Health Education in the primary school.
This resource sets out to explore how the use of Children's picture and story books can bring the subject of SPHE alive in terms of the feelings and emotions experienced in daily life, and equally enhance the wellbeing of everyone through the use of such a medium. It begins by laying out an overview of the SPHE curriculum and reference to the wellbeing framework. It then presents guidance for using the document and in so doing explores how to choose the appropriate book for reading to children, and setting the scene for such a choice, together with the expectations around the listening and participation part. A comprehensive list of books is provided with an explanation of content and subject matter for each, which is followed by a number of lesson plans with specific books in mind. These are adaptable and interchangeable with different class groupings.
